The front porch should be both welcoming and functional. It can be a simple entrance to your home, or a larger space for relaxing, visitng and waving to the neighbors. If you expect to sell your house, an attractive porch adds curb appeal and value.

I love restoring buildings to their original style, and this porch renovation was a lot of fun. The only real issue we had was that it occurred during the aftermath of COVID so we had some delays in supply deliveries. But experience pays off, and I was able to keep the project moving along.

Decks
A simple deck is a great platform for chairs, dining sets and grills. Add a railing for safety and containing babies and pets! There are a number of options for decking material and railings from pressure treated wood, to composites, PVC, aluminum and cast iron. I have used them all and can help you determine what is best for your needs and budget.
These two Simsbury decks are both constructed of pressure treated wood. Wood decks will require more maintenance than man-made products but they can be styled, finished and painted to match your home and vision precisely. And, ressure treated wood is generally a less expensive option.
This traditional style deck was part of a larger project that included the kitchen, bathroom, and garage of the home. We used concealed fasteners which helps to prevent deck deterioration and keeps its appearance smooth and seamless.
We also built a storage area under the deck with access through a small door next to the steps.
A Deck Updated In the Nick of Time!
I have worked in this customer’s house for many years. Their plans to redo the deck kept getting put to the bottom of the list, but last fall we realized it was time. They wanted to replace everything with low maintenance materials but we were concerned about the condition of the framing as time went on. Luckily, it just needed some extra support and a little repair. The underlying framework is very important to the strength, appearance and longevity of any deck. And many people don’t realize that decking material such as Trex and Duralife often cannot just be added on top of existing framing.
